Rezum (Water Vapor Therapy for BPH)

Rezum (Water Vapor Therapy for BPH)

What This Treatment Is For

Rezūm™ water vapor therapy is a minimally invasive, office-based procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as prostate enlargement. It uses targeted water vapor (steam) energy to shrink excess prostate tissue and relieve urinary symptoms without the need for major surgery.

Who It’s For

Rezūm is ideal for men with moderate urinary symptoms such as weak urinary flow, urgency, frequent nighttime urination, or incomplete bladder emptying. It is a good option for patients who want to avoid long-term medication or more invasive procedures like TURP. Rezūm is typically suitable for prostate sizes up to 80cc.

How the Procedure Works

Performed as an outpatient procedure, Rezūm uses a small device inserted through the urethra to deliver steam injections into the prostate. Each treatment lasts just seconds. The prostate tissue gradually shrinks over the following weeks. Local anesthesia and light sedation are commonly used. A urinary catheter is often placed for 2–5 days afterward.

Patients may need a urine test before treatment and should stop blood thinners as instructed.

Recovery & Aftercare

Mild burning during urination, urgency, or blood in the urine is common temporarily. Most men return to work within 2–3 days.

Risks & Complications

Possible risks include urinary tract infection, temporary urinary retention, or mild bleeding. Serious complications are rare.

Alternatives

Medications, UroLift®, GreenLight™ laser therapy, or TURP may also be considered.
