GreenLight Laser Vaporization of the Prostate
What This Treatment Is For
GreenLight™ laser therapy, also known as photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP), is a minimally invasive surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It uses high-powered laser energy to remove obstructing prostate tissue and restore normal urine flow with reduced bleeding risk compared to traditional surgery.
Who It’s For
This procedure is ideal for men with moderate to severe urinary symptoms such as weak stream, frequent urination, straining, or incomplete bladder emptying. GreenLight is often recommended for men who are not good candidates for open surgery and may be suitable for selected patients who are on blood thinners, depending on their medical profile. It is typically used for prostate sizes up to 80–100cc.
How the Procedure Works
GreenLight is performed as day-surgery in the operating room under spinal or general anesthesia. A thin scope is passed through the urethra to access the prostate, and laser energy is used to vaporize obstructing tissue. The procedure typically takes 45–90 minutes, and most men require a urinary catheter for 24–48 hours afterward.

Recovery & Aftercare
Most patients return home the same day. Temporary urinary urgency, frequency, or mild burning during urination may occur for a few weeks as healing progresses.
Effectiveness & Risks
GreenLight provides rapid and durable symptom relief with minimal bleeding, making it an excellent option for medically complex patients. Risks include urinary retention, temporary difficulty urinating, or rare urethral stricture. Retrograde ejaculation can occur but erectile function is usually preserved.
Alternatives
Treatment alternatives include TURP surgery, Rezūm™ water vapor therapy, or medications for BPH.
